The wife was smarter and quicker than me... she leapt away from the plate glass shop window and shouted at us to do the same. Trouble was, for my daughter jayne and I, the ground was wobbling so bad at that point that we just could not stand up. 20 seconds or so later (lived at some accelerated sense of perception that made it fell like 30 minutes) it was over.. at least the ground shaking part!

I was ready to leap over the counter to splash cold water or whatever but they were ok in that sense but in fact were in total fear for their kids at the nearby school... even so one lady took the trouble to handover some guys order, despite his protests and insisted that we take a refund on our order.

The small church we had been near just minutes ago was teetering on total collapse. The converted cinema building just around the corner had littered the road for a considerable distance with huge pieces of lethal masonry.

Speech to Text Magic Auto-Adds Captions to Videos

	YouTube added the wondrous ability to include auto-captioning to all users a while back.

This is where some really smart speech-to-text algorithms work out what you are saying by analysing the sound and add captions to your video, like subtitles.

The results may be hilarious. “life-size” may get translated to “like flies”.

The mind boggles at the potential for cock-up’s and international incidents.

Still, a very brave move.

	YouTube have been fiddling with their landing page for some time - I have to say that my awareness of the subtleties of the YouTube interface is such that I hardly notice the changes - but I am sure I am the exception. This article produced back in January provided a much more insightful view of the changes than I could contemplate and even included annotated screen grabs for your enlightenment.

	The more recent changes from YouTube are finely described in this updated article – the fine user interface tuning is reported to be driven by user feedback so let us hope we can sleep secure knowing that video downloaders the world over will not be frustrated.

DoD Delights by Accepting Social Networking

	PCWorld ->Tech Industry

	US Defense Department catches up with the world and gives the OK for social networking.

	Last year the Marines banned the use of social-networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter from its network but the use of social networking tools has proved to be too valuable to deny - the official DoD site now makes heavy use of Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

	You can now catch up the military view with such podcasts like "The View from the Chair" from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on YouTube.

	The US DoD is obviously a big mover with a huge budget - it will be interesting to watch what effect it's approval if not involvement in social networking will produce.

Admin
